A stock picker, also known as an order picker is a machine which is somewhat like a forklift. It allows the operator to use forks to pick up a pallet. An order picker is also capable of lifting the operator up to higher shelves for picking certain objects, and this feature is something the lift truck does not provide. Normally, order pickers are powered by electricity. These type of machinery are mainly used in a warehouse environment. Most often they are used for moving pallets and completing certain tasks in the shelving and stocking department.
The operator of the oder picker sits up on a platform where they operate the controls. These controls help to direct the machinery backwards, forwards or steer it from side to side. When the operator has positioned the unit in place the blades could be raised to the required level which makes it convenient for the operator. Like for instance, if the needed materials, are situated on a shelf that the operator could not reach, then whole platform is capable of being raised up to certain level. Due to the counterweight located at the other end, the unit remains balanced, even at higher levels.
After the order has been picked, the platform is lowered back to its original position. Then the order picker can be driven to its next load. With the majority of models, it is possible to move the order picker whilst the platform is raised, although, some companies might have policies and procedures in place preventing such maneuvers for safety reasons. An order picker could also place pallets on a shelf. Forklifts and stackers could be utilized to finish these specific jobs at some companies instead.
