Forklift Battery Safety
The big industrial sized batteries used to run electric lift trucks should be charged regularly and properly maintained. Safety measures should always be followed when someone connects the battery to the charger. It is very important to check battery fluid levels.
PPE - Personal Protective Equipment
Eye protection is essential for anybody working with a forklift battery. Complete protection includes goggles, safety glasses, or a full face shield. The right way to protect clothes and skin from other residue or leaked acid is to wear thick rubber gloves on the hands and an approved apron on the body.
Emergency Eyewash Station
An emergency eyewash station should be located near the charging area. The route to the station should not be blocked and an employee who is injured must be able to reach the eyewash station from the charging place in 10 seconds while walking.
Charger Safety
The charger and battery should be at the same amperage. It should be turned off when the battery is being plugged in.
Open Flames
While near a battery and charging area, open fire are prohibited. Never permit objects like matches or lighters to be utilized while an employee is inspecting the fluid levels in the battery.
Ventilation
The battery charging are also needs to be correctly ventilated. The recharging process can cause fumes to be released. These fumes are both toxic and explosive.
